Again, I am a very delinquent blogger, but as you can probably tell from a couple of these photo's the kid had to get out and enjoy the sunshine and all the benefits that sunshine in the summer can bring in Nova Scotia. Most of those things includes, beach, pool, family get togethers and celebrations all of which go extremely well with cigars and a beverage.
So back a couple of weeks ago now, summer finally decided to grace us with its presence here in NS. After what felt like a month of rain, fog and all other crappy weather patterns that could hit us, did so, we were blessed with the sun's return. Not sure who sacrificed what and to whom, but thanks!
So after shuffling our beloved lil darlings off to the grandfolks for the week and being completely rained out on Sunday, a #cigarMonday was in order. I broke out my Romeo y Julieta Short Churchill. This is the last one of these little beauties i had in reserve from my In-Laws trip down south earlier this year. Having it in the tube, it was extremely fresh and had a wonderful smell and texture. It lit like a beauty and provided a fantastic accompaniment to a rainless Monday evening.
Along for the ride were a couple of cerveza's, that Im sure most ( of age of course) will have tried before, Corona with a lime wedge. Now I cannot recall exactly why i required two off the bat that day, but as pictured above, I wasnt sharing.
I am not a big beer drinker anymore, but sometimes, in the summer there is an itch, that nothing, but a Corona can scratch.
I quickly got all my prep done with the cigar and the beers and was out on the pool deck before you could say cigar selfie.
Joined by my wife and former sweet heart, we enjoyed the lack of begging, whining and tattling. Love our kids, but a little #parentcation is needed from time to time.
Corona and lime is a very subtle taste so the cigar really did the heavy lifting in terms of the flavor. But it kept its burn and ash really well. I got about 30min out of the cigar and was pretty happy with that.
So jump ahead almost a week and we are at a family function in Pictou County. Pictured above is moi with the bride outside the reception. The bride in question is one of my wife's cousins. I have know her since she was a little older then zero and amongst the massive family that is on my wife's side I would say she has a strong connection to our little portion of that family. Daphne and I would spend a ton of time in our dating/high school years hanging out with her parents at their house, we babysat her, and tried to help her with various parts of her life as she went through them when we could or were invited to do so. She is also our daughters godmother, which is something we take very seriously and while she was attending University in Antigonish considered her as part of our family while she was here.
She had decided to do a Vegas wedding earlier this year and we were unable to attend, but knew she was planning on having this reception in the summer. Aside from summer deciding to show up this week with 30+ degree weather and everyone being in a lather haha, it was a great evening. We got to see a great gal celebrate a new chapter of her life with her partner, see some family and friends that we have not seen in a while and be at home in Pictou.
Even though it wasnt Sunday, I decided to bring another Romeo y Julieta cigar with me, you know, just in case i needed to sneak out for a break.
So about an hour or two in, it was time for that cigar. Now I was the designated driver so my beverage to accompany the cigar was water. It was cold and had ice cubes, very good year for these ice cubes, reminded me of back packing across the frozen Labrador tundra as a younger man, but I digress.
While I was out on the catholic hall wheel chair ramp enjoying my cigar. The bride herself came out for a breath of fresh air, oopsie, so i took the opportunity to grab a quick cigar selfie.
We chatted briefly and she was off again to continue to mingle and dance the night away. Shortly after we left as our children and dogs needed attending to, but it was such a blessing to have had the chance to share this day with someone that we hold very dear to our family. Also someone that I, unfortunately, introduced her to University football games and halftime streakers. I guess that is why she choose X over Acadia....all the filth. hahaha.
The next day we were heading back to Gods Country and the beach to spend some time with other family members that we didnt get to chat to much the night before.
The last time we 'went to the cottage' I brought along a couple Don Thomas Nicaraguan cigars. Uncle Dan and I both enjoyed them and as it was his first time trying the brand i thought i would bring along my favorite of their product line - the Don Thomas Classico Presidente. I also brought a third one in case anyone else wanted to give it a go.
I picked up a bottle of Dewars 12 year old blended scotch as well. The last time I had brought out the Tomatin 12 yr single malt and thought maybe a blend might be a better fit in case anyone wanted to try scotch and wanted a more mellow flavor.
Blends and irish whiskey go really well with the DTC Presidente also so I was pretty sure it would be a good fit.
After a quick point to point swim ( about 2km but i didnt go shore to shore so calling it a 1.5km swim) and some beach side chats, i got the cigars cut and scotch poured. My wife's cousin Alex decided to give the scotch and the 3rd cigar a try. The 3 cigar amigos ( as pictured above) look like a nasty group that you dont want to tangle with haha.
Dan is a fan of the Presidente, it is a great long smoke and has a fantastic flavor and you really cant go wrong with the 9$ price point.
The Dewars was what i expected, it was a mild tasty blend, a Monday - Thursday scotch as a former employer once said, and very drinkable. I do prefer a bit more of flavor with scotch but this was perfect for the beach.
Again another day to be thankful for those with us, surrounded by the gentle push of the water onto the sand, salt air and sunshine. Hopefully this weather will keep around for the next few weeks so a few more #cigarSundays can happen beachside.
