Okay, this is one of these reviews that I am going to wish I was able to separate the beverage from the cigar, but that is not the point, it is to look at how effective or ineffective the pairing was as a combo. So lets get into it. I have only had one Julius Caesar cigar before, and my recollection was that it was bomb dot com. So I was pretty excited to see them at a local cigar shop in the Hamilton area and decided to pay up to get one ( I think around $30 Canadian). When I looked at what I had in my hotel fridge for companionship I decided given the heat of the day and what i remember about the stick, I would go with something light and refreshing like a pale ale. This offering from Great Lakes Brewing also had killer graphics, and I am a sucker for patriotic branding. So I grabbed this out of the fridge and heading down to the outdoor patio at the hotel that seemed to have a blind eye to allowing smoking to happen on premises. I thanked them continually as the street side of the hotel was been patrolled by a number of folks that looked stabby in nature. So not wanting to get stabbed, I enjoyed a number of cigars last week on this patio. So how did this combo fair, lets see the scale:
Pairing Hots:
- The beer had a great dry sweet taste, with the perfect amount of hoppiness. Fruity with a slight bitterness that played really well with the flavors of the cigar
- The cigar had a burst of sweet spice, wood, with hints of coffee throughout.
- Both played very well together
- The construction of the cigar was not great for this one
- The wrapper split and made the draw very airy
- Multiple relights
- See below
Having this happen was quite disappointing. I am not sure if it can blamed on the construction or maybe the humidor at the store I purchased it at in Ontario, but given the cost I was not a happy camper, thus the low score. before it started falling apart it was on par for a good 8 fire emoji score, but after this I really couldnt justify that high of a score. I will give these a try again, but I will be letting them rest in my humidor for a good while before lighting one up. Props to Great Lakes Brewing though on the Pale Ale. I really enjoyed it.
